Getting to Know Mill Creek

  • Soper Park 120 Shade Street Cambridge, ON, N1R Canada (map)

Getting to Know Mill Creek is a two hour nature connection field trip to the banks of Mill Creek at Soper Park. Participants will play activating games, engage in discussion, and perform a simple biological survey where we identify invertebrate species whose presence may indicate the health of the water and surrounding ecosystems. The workshop will inspire wonder, reflection, and a sense of interconnection with our animal and plant neighbours in our watershed community.

The workshop begins with a welcome, opening circle, and sharing of a natural history of the area. We will then play a small game based on the theme of knowing the land and creek better. We then head to the creek.

While wading in the shallows of Mill Creek we will spend time using buckets and nets to catch, identify, and catalogue invertebrate species. After we release all that we have found back into the creek, we will walk back to our starting point to debrief and share our highlights. Participants will be invited to browse our portable naturalist library and are encouraged to follow-up on questions and observations made.
